신임 주한 교황대사에 '알프레드 수에레브' 몬시뇰 임명

 

프란치스코 교황은 교황청 재무원 사무총장 알프레드 수에레브 몬시뇰(Msgr. Alfred Xuereb, 59세, 몰타)을 아만테아(Amantea) 명의 대주교로 임명하고, 대한민국과 몽골 교황대사로 임명하셨다. 이 내용은 2018년 2월 26일(월) 12시(현지 시각, 한국 시각 오후 8시) 교황청 기관지 로세르바토레 로마노에 발표되었다.

신임 교황대사로 임명된 수에레브 몬시뇰은 1958년 몰타에서 태어났으며, 1984년 사제품을 받았다. 교황청립 “데레사” 대학에서 신학 박사 학위를 받고, 1991년부터 1995년까지 교황청립 라테라노 대학교 학장 개인 비서를 지냈다. 이후 1995년부터 교황청 국무원 국무부 근무를 시작으로 2000년 교황궁내원에서 재직하였다. 2007년 12월부터 2013년 3월까지 베네딕토 16세 교황의 제2 개인 비서를 지내다 2013년 3월 프란치스코 교황 선출 이후 교황 제1 개인 비서를 역임하였다. 2014년 3월부터 현재까지 교황청 재무원 사무총장을 맡고 있다.
 
수에레브 몬시뇰은 한국 주재 교황대사로 임명됨과 동시에 대주교로 임명이 되어 3월 중순 주교품을 받고, 이후 우리나라에 부임할 예정이다. 수에레브 대사는 영어, 이탈리아어, 프랑스어, 독일어, 포르투갈어를 구사한다.

교황청은 대한민국과 공식 수교 이전인 1947년 8월부터 주한 교황 사절을 파견하였으며, 1948년 유엔(UN) 승인 이전에 이미 대한민국 정부를 인정하여, 국제사회에서 한반도의 유일한 합법 국가로 승인받는 데 결정적인 역할을 하였다.  

 

몰타공화국(Republic of Malta)은 지중해 한가운데 있는 작은 섬나라이며 수도는 발레타이다. 인구는 41만 5천 명(2016년)으로 대부분 몰타인이며 공용어로 몰타어와 영어를 사용한다.

인구 대부분인 90% 이상이 로마 가톨릭 신자이며, 몰타 대교구와 고조(Gozo) 교구 2개의 교구가 있다. 은퇴 주교 2명(Prosper Grech 추기경, Paul Cremona 대주교)과 현직 주교 2명(Charles Jude Scicluna 대주교, Mario Grech 주교) 등 모두 4명의 주교가 있다. 그 외 코트디부아르 교황대사 Joseph Spiteri 대주교가 몰타 출신이며, 수에레브 대사의 임명으로 몰타 출신 교황대사가 늘어났다. 성 요한 바오로 2세 교황이 1990년, 2001년 두 번에 걸쳐 방문하였으며, 2010년 베네딕토 16세 교황이  방문하여 모두 세 번의 교황 방문이 있었다.

Appointment of apostolic nuncio to South Korea and Mongolia

The Holy Father has appointed Rev. Msgr. Alfred Xuereb, prelate secretary general of the Secretariat for Economic Affairs, as apostolic nuncio in South Korea and in Mongolia, assigning him the titular see of Amantea, with the dignity of archbishop.

Rev. Msgr. Alfred Xuereb

The Rev. Msgr. Alfred Xuereb was born in Gozo, Malta on 14 October 1958.

He was ordained a priest on 26 May 1984 and incarnated in Gozo.

After obtaining a degree in theology he began his administrative service at the Secretariat of the Rector of the Pontifical Lateran University in September 1991.

He was transferred to the General Affairs Section of the Secretariat of State on 1 September 1995; to the Prefecture of the Papal Household in November 2000 and to the General Affairs Section of the Secretariat of State (the Special Secretariat of Benedict XVI) on 11 September 2007 and to the Special Secretariat of Pope Francis on 15 March 2013.

He was appointed as delegate for the Pontifical Commission for Reference on the Institute for the Works of Religion and for the Pontifical Commission for study and guidance on the organization of the economic-administrative structure of the Holy See on 28 November 2013.

He was appointed as prelate secretary general of the Secretariat for Economic Affairs on 3 March 2014.

He knows Italian, English, German, Portuguese and French.
